All of the cloud apps mentioned here will work on a Mac. The Google Drive App is a handy utility that will synchronise all of the data in a folder on your Mac with Google Drive. This means that the data is backed up on a remote server. As well as that all of the data in that folder is now available on any other internet enabled device.

Microsoft Office online
Anyone can create a free account at OneDrive. Staff and students can access a DEC provided version by either 1. clicking hereand using your DEC email address and password or 2. access it from your portal. Once logged in you can use the online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. These online versions don't have all of the features of the downloaded programs but are sufficient for many people.

Office for Mac 2011 is free for students and $23.25 forstaff.
Office 365 is free for students. You can download it via your portal. For students, once you have logged in go to the home page of your portal and look under the 'Learning' banner. You might need to click on the + icon and at the bottom of the list there might be the word 'more'. Click on either or both of these until you can see 'Microsoft Office 365'. Click on that and a window will pop up. In that window there will be a red rectangle near the top with 'Install now'.
Office 365 is also free for staff.Log into your portal and click on 'My learning tools' just under your Essentials icons. Go to M and click on 'Microsoft Office 365'. There is an install button on the page that comes up.

Essentially Office 365 is a subscription service with an annual fee which is waived for students and staff for as long as they are enrolled at school. 365 has a stronger focus on cloud integration.

Run Windows on a Mac
There are a number of ways to run Windows on a Mac. The Apple solution is to use BootCamp. Bootcamp requires you to reboot your Mac and then select Windows. From there the Mac will operate just like a Windows PC. Apple has further information here.

The other option is to have Windows running at the same time as your Mac environment. Parrallels and VMWare are both commercial products that will do this and are available to students forfree. VirtualBox isfree for everyone. With VirtualBox you can have as many virtual environments as you choose. For instance you might want to have different versions of Windows and Linux in separate virtual drives. And you can have them all running at the same time as your Mac environment if you like.

For every app I look at I first check the number of reviews and stars it has received and then I also check the date the last version was released.
